Digital Illustration Demo Reel
I spent some time yesterday putting together a sideshow of some of my illustration work. Showing so many pieces in 3 minute plus reel is not always the best way of showcasing your talent. But for those that may have a few minutes and would like to see some fun stuff.. it may be a nice escape for you. I’m joining some freelance sites and needed a reel that not only showed quality but breadth. Work with: Pen and ink style, digital watercolor and ink washes, digital paint, vector illustration, concept art, cartooning, story art, creatures and all types of personalities. This work in this reel is just a small fraction of how much time I’ve invested into learning and producing art and graphics.
I’ve added this reel to my Demo Reels main page. If you’ve not seen my Animation Demo Reel yet, you can see it here. You can also check out some of my royalty free flash animation here and my 10 Second Cartoons here.
Thanks for watching.
Night And Day Animation
August/24/2010 05:50 PM Filed in: Royalty Free Flash Animations
Last year on the 9th of September, I uploaded a new animation. I wanted to comment on this one because of some of the things I learned while making this animation. I animated it in anime studio and exported the animation as a swf and brought that into flash where I optimized it further. Anime studio gave me keys on every frame. Lots of keys are no problem for those wanting to use the royalty free flash animation in video, but for the Web, lots of keys can mean too big of a file size. I went through the keys in flash removing what I could and cleaning it up so that it was smaller in file size. In the end I’m pretty happy with the result. I worked to give the sun lots of character and personality. It’s not one of my more popular downloads and I think part of the reason for that is that it has both night and day in the same animation. If I just made the sun its own animation, it pops up and shines and stays up. I believe it would sell more. Many people that are downloading the flash animations are putting them into presentations and don’t really want to mess with editing the animation. It may be worth re-uploading a new version with just the sun against a blank background to see if it gets more downloads.

Joey Gates explains: "Anime Studio Pro 7" Point level animation
Correction: "I keep calling the mouth one shape, but really it's one object... they are separate shapes connected or joined shapes. The mouth object sits on only one layer." jg
A quick explanation of how I set up a character in Anime Studio Pro 7 and animate them using point level animation. A great way to add stretch and squash to your characters. If you find this explanation helpful then please comment so that I know to make more. I could also make some more detailed tutorials. Thank you for watching.=)

Democrat Donkey & Republican Elephant
August/14/2010 06:30 PM Filed in: Vector Illustration | Royalty Free Illustrations

I’ve noticed this vector illustration has been picking up in sales lately on iStock. Can you tell November is coming soon? lol I tired to not favor one political party over another when creating this illustration. Although, if I show it to a democrat, he thinks it makes fun of the republicans. When I show it to a republican, he thinks it makes fun of the democrats. I guess politics is secondary to human nature.

I first sketched this up in Corel Painter 11 and then inked the outlines in Painter with black at 300dpi. Then I vectorized the B/W art and colored it in Adobe Flash. The final step was to get it into Adobe Illustrator so that I could prepare it to be a clean EPS file that will work well in older versions of graphic programs.

New 2D Cartoon! Eat My Sandwich!

I took some time to finish up a short cartoon. This was animated with AnimeStudio Pro 6. First however, I penciled out the rough animation in the program “Pencil” it’s free open-source animation program that allows for both vector and bitmapped drawing. Then I took that pencil test into AnimeStudio to finish up the cartoon.
I recently met with a certain Ryan Simmons. He’s the owner/animator/illustrator of Cartoon Solutions and a very nice guy. He brought to my attention that a cartoon made with existing characters could give my cartoon more views and exposure. His StarWars Spoof cartoons already had a large fan-base the minute he created them. Thank you very much for the advice Ryan! So, in finishing up this short cartoon I made them little kid versions of Edward Cullen and Bella from the Twilight Saga. I’ll have to watch closely to see if this one get’s more traction that my other animation tests or toons.
